My name is Emmitt Grant, I am the owner of Pa Pa Smurf, X-Treme Ink, in Summerdale, Alabama ...... ![]() At about the age ten, I starting to noticing tattoo's and I wanted to learn more about them so I tattooed myself and a heart on my cousin's shoulder one afternoon school. I remember I found a magazine that had a story about a well known artist named Doc Webb of San Diego, Calif. I new right then, I had to find this artist. Five years later the Viet Nam war was rolling, so having no better way to get to SanDiego, but to let the Goverment pay for it, so I join the Navy and I was off the San Diego and to find this artist named Doc Webb. At the end of boot camp, I get a eight hour pass, so I set out to find him, which I did, just three blocks from where the magazine said he was at. Doc, took me in on a appreniticeship, and when I went to Japan, it was Doc Webb that helped me find a shop over there to study tattooing also. After returning to Biringham, Alabama, it was Doc Webb that helped me again. Back then you could not just pick up a magazine and order tattoo supplies. Doc Webb introduced me to Flo at National Tattoo Suppy, and Huck Spaulding tattoo supply, it was not to long after that, when the president of Tattoo Club of American, Spider Webb in the city of New York, asked me to join his tattoo club, then Interernational Tattoo Artist Association wrote me and ask me to join them. Shortly afterward the Japan tattoo club wrote me for membership with them. Over 30 years ago Flo at National Tattoo Supply, told me of a young artist name Dixie Dan in Gadsden, Alabama and a friendship was born that is still strong today. Dan, knows the fine art of tuning a tattoo machine, he can take a machine, and make it run better then my mothers sewing machine. I am proud to say he is my friend.
